Supporting Students Struggling with Substance Use

March 15, 2024

College life can be both exciting and challenging. This can especially be true as your student navigates alcohol and substance use when they come to college. Alcohol, cannabis, and Adderall are the most commonly misused substances on college campuses.

One of the resources available to students at EWU is the Eagles for Recovery program. Eagles for Recovery is a comprehensive support program designed for EWU students who are in recovery, thinking about recovery, and recovery allies. The program offers a range of services, including a lounge where students can hang out, peer coaching, weekly support groups, recovery ally training, and sober events, all aimed at promoting wellness and fostering a supportive community for students in recovery. This is not a treatment program.

As parents, you play a crucial role in supporting your child’s well-being, including their decisions regarding substance use. While we understand that talking to your child about such topics can be challenging, open and honest communication is key. Here are some tips for discussing substance use with your student:

  • Create an Open Environment: Foster an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing sensitive topics without fear of judgment. Let them know that you are there to listen and support them, no matter what.
  •  Be Non-Judgmental: Avoid criticizing or blaming your child for their choices. Instead, express concern for their well-being and offer your support in finding solutions.
  • Set Clear Expectations: Communicate your expectations regarding substance use, such as the importance of making responsible decisions and seeking help if needed.
  • Encourage Healthy Coping and Socializing Strategies: Help your child develop healthy coping strategies for managing stress and other triggers that may lead to substance use. Some students say that substances help them feel more open in social situations.

If you believe that your child could benefit from the support offered by Eagles for Recovery or if you have any concerns about their well-being, the program is in Showalter Hall 118 and open Spring Quarter 2024. Together, we can help your child receive the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally during their time at EWU.
