EWU Helping Wildfire Victims
Published: August 12, 2014
CHENEY, Wash. - In an effort to help students and their families impacted by the Carlton Complex Fires, a team of financial aid counselors and outreach staff from Eastern Washington Universithy visited Okanogan County to provide assistance to those who are planning to attend Eastern this fall.
The financial aid and outreach team held meetings at Okanogan High School and Omak Middle School on Tuesdy, August 12, to make it more convenient for affected students to get their questions answered. This comes after Eastern recently authorized $250,000 of aid for an EWU Student Hardship Fund to help with tuition and housing for current and incoming students in Okanogan County.
"Our intent is to minimize the devastating effects that our students are facing so that their success in college continues with as little interruption as possible," said Neil Woolf, associate vice president for enrollment management. "We have identified 77 currently enrolled students and 88 of our incoming freshman and applicants as being from the Carlton Complex Fire region."
EWU Vice President for Student Affairs Stacey Morgan Foster said hardship grants are also available to EWU students outside of the Carlton Complex fire area. Students who were not able to meet with EWU during the visit to Okanogan County may apply through the EWU Financial Aid Office. To talk with a financial aid counselor, students can call 509.359.2314 or email email@example.com.
To ensure as many students as possible receive assistance, the EWU Foundation has started a fundraising effort to support the Hardship Fund. Donations can be made through the Foundation at www.ewu.edu/hardshipfund.
