MFA Student Nationally Honored

Published: March 26, 2013

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington University's Inland Northwest Center for Writers is delighted to announce that Master of Fine Arts candidate Karen Maner is one of three national winners of the 2013 Associated Writing Programs (AWP) Intro Journals Award in Creative Nonfiction.

Selected from among hundreds of nominations by virtually every MFA program in the country, Maner's essay, "Hugo," will be published in an upcoming issue of the Colorado Review.

The Intro Journals Project is a literary competition for the discovery and publication of the best new works by students in AWP member programs. Programs nominate student works, and winners are selected for publication in first-rate national literary journals. This year's judge in nonfiction was author and critic Rigoberto Gonzalez, himself the winner of such honors as the American Book Award.

Maner, under the guidance of her thesis advisor, Associate Professor Rachel Toor, has been working hard on her MFA thesis, which will include her award-winning essay. Scheduled to graduate this spring, Maner is the assistant coordinator for EWU's Get Lit! Festival. She was also one of several MFA students who attended this year's national AWP conference in Boston, with financial assistance from the Office of Graduate Studies, the College of Arts, Letters and Education and the Department of English.
