About EWU Chemistry

"Eastern is just big enough to have most of the programs that students would want to take, but small enough that there's a lot of face-to-face interaction between students and faculty." — Eric Abbey

Scholarship Opportunities

Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics students receive approximately $2,790 in scholarships each year—just one part of the $9.7 million EWU awards annually to nearly 1,500 students through a single scholarship application. Scholarships aren’t just for top GPAs or athletes—they’re based on your major, background, community service, and more. And the best part? Scholarships are free money you don’t have to pay back.

The EWU General Scholarship Application for the academic year opens Nov. 1 and closes Feb. 1.

EWU Chemistry Program FAQs

The main difference between a BA and a BS in chemistry lies in their focus area.

A BS degree emphasizes more intensive training in science and mathematics, making it ideal for students interested in research, working as a chemist, or pursuing graduate studies.

A BA degree offers greater flexibility by allowing more electives outside of chemistry, which is beneficial for those who wish to combine chemistry with other fields or career paths.

To determine the best option for you, it’s a good idea to discuss your interests and goals with your advisor.

To prepare for a Chemistry and Biochemistry major at Eastern Washington University, you should complete high school chemistry and math through precalculus.

If you’re a transfer student, connect with the department early to map out your coursework and stay on track for graduation.

Because chemistry courses follow a structured sequence, it’s important to start General Chemistry (CHEM 171, 172, 173 and labs) in your first year. You should also begin supporting courses in math and physics right away and complete them before your junior year.

For success in upper-level coursework, we recommend earning at least a 2.0 (C) or higher in all prerequisite chemistry courses.

Please work with your General Academic Advisor until you reach major-ready status (90+ credits) and have completed CHEM 172 & 172L with a C or higher.

To declare your major:

  1. Fill out the top portion of the Major Declaration Form.
  2. Select the appropriate boxes under Major (first-time declaration, changing majors etc.).
  3. Add a minor if required or desired.
  4. Print the form.
  5. Email chemistry@ewu.edu to be assigned a departmental advisor.
  6. Make an appointment with your advisor to review and sign the form.
  7. Submit the completed form to Records and Registration.
