Understanding the Phenomenon of Suicide

Dr. Keely Hope is a Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Program Director of the Counseling Graduate Program in the School of Psychology. Professionally, her background includes working with acute and severe mental health issues in the indigent and homeless population as well as in a college-counseling center. She sees clients in a local group practice. One of her favorite aspects of education is supervising her students’ clinical experiences; from first year student’s just learning to second year’s coming into their own. She also enjoys teaching the diagnosis class as well as crisis intervention. Dr. Hope’s research interests originated in her early working experiences, which include studying crisis response and intervention and specializing in suicide prevention by understanding a person’s reasons for living. She has created a class to address the special needs of the LGBTQ+ population in counseling that has been well received. Those interests have persisted throughout her career and have branched into presentations, publications and workshops. She has also completed the education requirements for a Certification in Mental Performance (to be granted by the Association of Applied Sport Psychology). Dr. Hope greatly enjoys continuing her own learning, especially through her experiences in travel.
