The History Program

History provides knowledge for unlocking all other realms of human development. The study of history provides a solid foundation not only for history and social studies education majors, but for careers in law, business, government, international relations, journalism, library services and museums. Please view the History Curriculum Guide for more information.

What History Majors Can Do For Employment

Please choose teaching because it is what you really want to do, and not because you think that is all you can do with a History degree.

If you want to teach history in secondary school, you can get there by majoring either in History or in Social Studies Education.

In general, it is probably better to major in Social Studies Education if you:

  • Want to begin teaching immediately after getting your BA
  • Are unsure about whether or not you want to get a Master's degree

The Social Studies Education Advisor is Professor Jacki Hedlund Tyler.  Contact info:  jtyler5@ewu.edu or 509-359-6025 or Patterson 103 M.

It is probably better to major in History if you:

  • Are unsure about whether or not teaching is right for you
  • Know that you want to pursue a Masters in Teaching

The Advisor for History Majors is Professor Ann Le Bar.

If you want to teach at the college level, you are better off with a History BA. Before deciding this is your preferred option, please read "The Graduate Degree in History" The road to becoming a history professor is long and difficult. For most students, getting an MA in History is preferable to pursuing a PhD.

Besides Teaching, What Can You Do with a History Degree?

A Note on Internships

An internship can give you important job experience, valuable connections in the field, and a means for finding out whether or not you truly want to work in the environment/career that you think is right for you. For more information, please be sure to read A Note on Internships

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 50-credit History BA and the 65-credit History BA?
The 50-credit BA also requires the completion of a minor or certificate. The 65-credit BA does not require the completion of a minor or certificate.

I took foreign language in high school. Why doesn't SOAR register that information?
If you are a transfer student, EWU probably never received your high school transcripts. Please have your high school transcripts sent to Records and Registration.

How can I have a hold removed from my record?
If it is an advising hold, the quickest way to have it removed is to email the History advisor.

Why can't I register for History 390/490?
EagleNet will block your registration if you don't have the correct prerequisites. If you want to enroll in the class despite not having the prerequisite, you must contact the instructor of the class for permission; this decision is up to the instructor of the course, not the History advisor.
