Alum Spotlight: Cole Evers

Cole Evers headshot

After entering EWU’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling MS program with limited experience in the mental health field, Cole Evers found a supportive community through the program’s cohort model, faculty mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities. Thanks to mock counseling sessions, practicum experiences, and an internship at EWU Counseling and Wellness Services, he developed the clinical skills and confidence needed to succeed in the profession.

Today, Evers is the Clinical Director of Counseling at EWU Counseling and Wellness Services—the same organization where he completed his internship. He credits the program’s comprehensive training in counseling techniques, crisis intervention, and child and family therapy with preparing him for his first post-graduation role and continued career growth. As he reflects on his experience, one lesson stands out: EWU created an environment that allowed students to be vulnerable, grow professionally, and become effective mental health counselors.

“The counseling program excels at teaching and creating ethical and effective mental health counselors,” says Evers. “Every single day, I use some knowledge or skill that was first taught to me by this program. As mental health clinicians, we have an elevated base level of empathy and compassion that is needed to do this work, and this program highlighted those traits and helped them flourish.”

Clinical Experience

Get real-world counseling experience through supervised practicum and internship placements across the region. Students begin with a practicum before completing a four-quarter internship sequence that builds hands-on clinical skills and professional confidence.

You’ll work closely with the program’s internship coordinator to secure approved placements aligned with your interests and career goals. Clinical experiences are available in a variety of settings serving diverse communities and populations.

Alum Spotlight: Adrienne Anderson

Adrienne Anderson, LMHC

After graduating from EWU’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling MS program, Adrienne Anderson ’11 began her career as a children’s mental health specialist before launching her own private practice: Whole Self Therapeutic.

Anderson credits her internship experience at EWU with helping her land her first professional role and preparing her to work with children and families in clinical settings. She says the program’s supportive learning environment and faculty mentorship were also key to her success.

“Professors listened, shared their experiences, and always made me feel like they had my best interests at heart,” she explains. “I also loved learning alongside my graduate school cohort.
