  • If you’re applying for the first time, you must be a junior and can apply again as a senior

  • Must be majoring in reading [literacy]
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0

Graduate Scholarships

Requirements & Guidelines

  • Must either be a history, or education major, or both
  • Will continue to do work to support the Cheney Normal Heritage School House by:
    • Create curriculum to share with the outside community and visiting students
    • Conduct tours and classes for students and other interested parties on behalf of the Education Department for the Cheney Normal Heritage School House

How to Apply

If you are a History or Education major and you work in or plan to work in the Cheney Normal Heritage School House, please contact your advisor to let them know you are interested in being considered for this scholarship. Once you and your advisor have evaluated your eligibility, please have your advisor contact Dianne Selcho in the Education Department at cselcho@ewu.edu with your name, EWU ID or NetID, and your contact information.

  • Must be seeking a master’s degree in literacy at Eastern Washington University.
  • The scholarship award may be renewed only once
  • Must maintain a minimum of 3.5 GPA
  • Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition and fees only
  • The awards shall be made on the basis of merit and need; if the academic records of applicants are comparable, the applicant(s) with the greatest financial need will be given preference

  • Must be a graduate-level student with “accepted” status in the Educational Leadership or Principal Certificate program
  • Must be a graduate student during the internship year in the program
  • Must demonstrate high academic performance and excellence in leadership responsibilities in the public-school setting
  • Must submit a double-spaced, one-page essay describing:
    • Why you want to become a principal
    • What innovations you would make as a public school principal and why you would make them
    • What characteristics of leadership you value the most

Eastern Reading Council

“Promoting Literacy by Putting Books in the Hands of Children.”

The Eastern Reading Council is open to all students, faculty and alumni who love to read and are passionate about promoting literacy. Group events take place quarterly including volunteer reading at local elementary schools and hosting a Scholastic Book Fair . Meetings are held monthly. Please contact Shelly Shaffer for more information.

This Council is affiliated with WaSLA (Washington State Literacy Association) and ILA (International Literacy Association).
