CBPA Newsletter

The first decade of the 21st century is now officially completed.  We have hopes that the new year will be the beginning of a turn-around in all matters that are of concern to us, especially in higher education.

Congratulations to Rex Fuller on his appointment as the University's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  We wish him all the best in this next step of his career.

As a result of Rex's appointment, the search for a new dean for the College has commenced.  Advertisements have gone out and the search committee is in place.  Screening will begin for candidates in March.  For information on the position, please visit EWU's web site at

Speaking of Commencement, the 2011 Commencement will be held on Saturday, June 11 at Roos Field in Cheney.  Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this important event to show our support for our students.

Congratulations also to Mary Ann Keogh Hoss, Rex Fuller, Niel Zimmerman, and Vance Cooney for the successful application of the Health Informatics Technology and Management (HITM) major to the Higher Education Coordinating Board.  As a result of that decision, the college will also gain a new professor to this program.  Dr. Atsoushi Inoue will become a faculty member in the Accounting and Information Systems Department, transferring to us from Computer Science effective Spring quarter.  He was recently promoted to full professor.

Another new faculty member joining the college as of the beginning of Winter quarter is Dr. Sohyoun (Synthia) Shin.  She is a Visiting Professor of Marketing and recently came to the U.S. from Korea.  She recently completed her PhD in Marketing at the Korea University Business School.  Her MS is from Boston University and BS from Ewha Womans University.

The MBA Program was selected as one of "The Best 300 Business Programs" in the country by the Princeton Review this past Fall and is one of 66 schools that appear on one or more of the Review's ranking lists.

Plans for funeral services for Dr. Lynne Bownds are pending.  Lynne passed away on January 8, 2011.  She was an associate professor of economics having joined the university in 1999.  She collaborated on many research projects with faculty in health services administration and business, and was instrumental in several initiatives with the Institute for Public Policy and Economic Analysis.

Upcoming Events

Riverpoint Campus Seasonal Flu Clinic

Free flu shots will be offered thanks to a donation of vaccine from Seattle-based Bartell Drugs. WSU College of Pharmacy students will give the shots to all interested students, faculty and staff.

This year's flu vaccine covers three different strains - including the H1N1 that hit the U.S. hard last year - so even those who have had the flu but did not get a flu shot could still benefit. Flu season generally starts in October, with the midpoint of influenza activity occurring in February or later in 60 percent of the flu seasons since 1976, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
