Math Placement Test (APTP)

The Academic Placement Testing Program (APTP) sponsors the Math Placement Test (MPT) initiated in January 1984 and it is offered at the five public universities in Washington. The purpose of APTP MPT is to place students into an entry level mathematics course at their respective universities. Note: Eastern cannot accept scores from a COMPASS or ASSET Math Placement Test.

Who is REQUIRED to take the APTP MPT?

All Students admitted to Eastern Washington University without an approved direct transfer degree must take the APTP Math Placement Test prior to registering for a math class.

At EWU Cheney Campus the APTP math placement test is given to examinees in group sessions regularly scheduled by Department of Mathematics. To view the schedule of APTP MPT sessions at EWU & other details click on link: APTP MPT Sessions at EWU.

About the APTP Math Placement Test at EWU?

There are several types of the mathematics placement test, such as...

  1. GENERAL test has 35 questions from the topics of Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, & Precalculus I (topics from Algebra I and II in the High School). At EWU this test type may place you into Math 100, 103A (default), 104A, 114, 105, 115, 200,  211 or 311.
  2. ADVANCED test has 30 questions from the topics of Intermediate Algebra & Precalculus I & II. At EWU this test type may place you into Math 105, 106, 115, 200, 311, 380, or 161. Placing into MATH 161 will meet the Mathematics Reasoning Proficiency Requirement for non-math related majors. If your score is below 147 on the Advanced Test, then to identify a math course placement you will need to retest or take the General Test. Students who took Precalculus and/or Calculus in high school and graduated or will graduate within the last year may qualify for special placement consideration. To review this policy, click on the link: Math 106 or 161 Enrollment Exception Policy

Before the test session an examinee will need to decide what type of APTP math placement test they will take. This decision is based on your mathematics background and the math course(s) you are required to pass for major or area of interest. Your math placement test score is determined by the number of problems you answer correctly and for placement purposes it is important that you do not guess at the answers. To view the chart of math course placement by test scores click on the following link: APTP MPT Cut-Off Scores at EWU

Note: An examinee with a documented disability that requires special testing accommodation will need to make prior arrangements with the EWU Disability Support Services Office in 124 Tawanka Hall at (509) 359-6871.
