Welcome to the Department of Biology's homepage. We hope that you will find the information you need at this website, and that you feel free to contact us for further information. Please visit us in person as well. Our department strives to create a community of learners with faculty and students interacting in the classrooms and lab/field classes, as well as through a variety of research opportunities.
A degree in biology is the first step into finding a career in one of hundreds of growing fields in health sciences, biotechnology and environmental sciences; in government agencies concerned with resource management, environmental quality and medical research; and in educational institutions as teachers and laboratory technicians. Learn about the various opportunities that EWU's Biology Department provides, by clicking on one of the links to side.
What are the degree options?
Biology encompasses the scientific study of life. The structure and function of organisms are studied at the molecular, cellular, organismal, population and ecosystems levels.
Biologists work in hundreds of fields, including the health sciences, biotechnology and environmental sciences; in government agencies concerned with resource management, environmental quality and medical research; and in educational institutions as teachers and laboratory technicians.
The Department of Biology offers undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) for Biology. All students are expected to work closely with their faculty advisor to determine their curriculum.
- The BS degree is designed for students who require a broad background in biology, along with specialized training that will prepare them for specific careers. The program is based upon a core curriculum to provide the common background. Coursework for specific careers is based on selection of elective courses tailored to career choice. Degree options or advising guides to different career options including: pre-medicine/pre-dentistry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant, pre-optometry, pre-chiropractic medicine, pre-medical laboratory science 4+1, pre-medical laboratory science 3+1, pre-pharmacy, pre-veterinary medicine, wildlife biology, botany/range science are available.
- If admitted to the University Fall 2013 or later, click on the advising guides here: pre-medicine/pre-dentistry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant, pre-optometry, pre-chiropractic medicine, pre-medical laboratory science 4+1, pre-medical laboratory science 3+1, pre-pharmacy, pre-veterinary medicine, wildlife biology, botancy/rance science.
- The BAE degree prepares students for teaching biology in secondary education.
In coordination with the program in Environmental Science, the Department of Biology offers an Evironmental Science major with an emphasis in Environmental Biology. This major includes a core curriculum that provides students with a broad exposure to biology, chemistry, geology, statistics, and geographic information systems. More focused courses in biology provide students with expertise in their emphasis area. Motivated students have the opportunity to obtain a double major in both environmental science and biology.
The Department of Biology offers minors in biology, health sciences, biology/secondary, and general science/add-on endorsements.
The Department of Biology offers a graduate program leading to the Master of Science in Biology. The MS degree is based on a core curriculum designed to provide students with the knowledge and tools to address a research question through their masters thesis. Support for graduate students is availabe on a competitive basis through Graduate Service Appointments.
