**Mathematics Department**

216 Kingston Hall

Cheney, WA 99004

## Mathematics

##### Department of Mathematics resides on the first two floors of Kingston Hall located on the corner of 5th Street and C-Street in Cheney, WA.

A degree in mathematics is the key to a successful career in one of many diverse fields in growing demand of skilled mathematicians. Whether your goal is to become an elementary, secondary or college level mathematics teacher or you wish to pursue a career as an actuary, consultant or another exciting career in industry or government, we have a degree program to fit your needs. Learn more about various mathematics degree options and career opportunities by visiting one of the pages listed below.

## What are the degree options?

**Quality Education at an Affordable Price**

At EWU you don't have to sacrifice quality to get an education you can afford. Our standards are high and our graduates are exceptionally well regarded in the community.**Small Class Sizes**

The majority of the mathematics courses offered specifically for majors are limited to 10-20 students per class section. General mathematics courses, such as Calculus, are usually limited to 35 or less students per section.**Attention to the Individual Student**

Professors have regularly scheduled office hours and are available to meet with students to discuss course content, curriculum advising and other individual needs. Professors frequently offer individual and directed studies on special topics selected to meet the individual student's need.**Classes are Taught by Regular Faculty**

With rare exceptions, all mathematics courses required for the majors are taught by regular faculty, most of whom have doctoral degrees. A small number of mathematics courses (mostly remedial courses) are taught by graduate instructors and/or adjunct faculty under supervision of a regular faculty member.**Excellent Job Prospects**

The Department of Mathematics has an excellent track record of placing students into jobs following graduation. Our graduates have moved on to become teachers in public and private schools, college instructors, actuaries, statisticians, aerospace analysts etc.**Variety of Career Opportunities**

There is a large number of opportunities available for graduates with a degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education. Visit our careers webpage for more information.**Graduation Guarantee**

Entering freshmen meeting certain admission requirements are eligible for a four-year graduation guarantee on select programs including the B.A., Mathematics as well as the Computer Science, Economics and Statistics options to this program.

High school students who want to pursue a major in this department (except the BAE Elementary Mathematics) should complete four years of high school mathematics, which includes two years of algebra, one year of geometry, and one year of pre-calculus mathematics. All prospective department majors should contact the Mathematics Department office as soon as possible after being admitted to EWU to obtain an adviser and to plan a program of study.

Transfer students should contact their advisor's office or the EWU Mathematics Department to identify appropriate lower-division and major/minor preparatory courses.

The Department of Mathematics offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in Mathematics, Mathematics Education as well as three application oriented degree options with emphasis on Computer Science, Economics or Statistics.

## What can I do with my degree?

While some have chosen to study mathematics simply for the love of the subject matter itself, there are a number of other compelling reasons for choosing mathematics as a career. A lucrative job market is available to talented graduates in mathematics that many prospective or even current students are not aware of. We have developed this webpage as a resource for students seeking information on what type of career opportunities a degree in mathematics can open the door to.

As one would imagine, many EWU mathematics graduates have chosen a career in which they can share their knowledge with others and have gone on to become successful mathematics teachers at various levels of public or private education systems, ranging from elementary schools to secondary schools to colleges and universities. This is probably the most well-known career for mathematicians and also mathematics teachers make up for by far the largest group of EWU mathematics graduates.

There are however many other very attractive career opportunities available for graduates who enjoy working with challenging mathematics problems, but for various reasons do not wish to become teachers.

A number of EWU mathematics graduates have pursued successful (and competitively compensated) careers as actuaries, scientists or consultants for government agencies or careers in the aerospace and automotive industry, in banking or investment firms or in the information technology field. The degree options in Statistics, Economics and Computer Science to the B.A. in Mathematics were designed specifically to prepare students for one or more of these types of careers.
